Ways To Save Your Marriage - Cont...

To determine who in your life is suitable to provide the support you need, rule out anyone who may be too close to your spouse or the life you have formed as a married couple. This would include anyone who is too close to both of you to think objectively or who already has a dislike for your spouse.

You want to find someone who knows you well and is known for giving honest and reasonable advice, even if it isn't exactly what you want to hear. Personality is important because someone who tends to go along with whatever you say is more likely to mirror back your own ideas without helping much. Someone with top notch listening skills and the ability to hold your best interest at heart without going overboard is best.

If you don't feel comfortable turning to anyone in your life, then a marital counselor is an excellent option. They may not know you personally but they are trained to listen intently and guide you toward the real issues that need to be worked through. They will also be able to think objectively since they do not have a vested interest in either you or your spouse.

Be careful turning to friends and family even if it is just to vent, not really seeking advice. Often, family members hear only the problems and negative remarks against your spouse. The problem is they are often left out of the loop when amends have been made and the need to vent has passed. The result is a very negative opinion of your spouse, since all they hear is the negative.
